18: Yangjie Gu - Courtesy - Invitations to Homes
China, Shanghai
Uh, Chinese people are like you just said, it’s a polite country. Usually we’ll invite some friends over to our homes as guests. But, usually, um, um, we invite friends to be guests at our homes in our own name, we invite family, um, [and] friends to our homes. At home, they’ll talk about more private things, more personal things, not public matters. So if someone invites you to, if a Chinese person invites you to their home, usually it’s to chat as friends. It won’t be formal conversation, [or] the kinds of things you talk about at work. Uh, Chinese people usually, their living space is different from that of Americans. Here, it’s usually a, an apartment, which is to say that there’s probably two families living on one floor, or three families. Uh, it’s different from a house in the US. So, in comparison, Chinese homes are comparatively a little smaller. Uh, before you go, I think, uh, Americans usually only need to bring a gift. Then, before you go [in], usually at the door you take off your shoes, then you go in. It’s like this because Chinese people usually, uh, don’t wear outside shoes in their homes. [So] if you just take off your shoes and your coat, and bring a gift, everything will be OK.
