| OK, so when Americans go to China, we, actually, if you take Chinese as a people, they treat guests, guests from afar… their attitude is very friendly. They won’t, because you speak English and can’t communicate with them well, they won’t talk to you; they’ll guess what you’re saying from your facial expressions. And I also think that if you use even really awful Chinese to talk to them, you won’t have a problem. If they’re [your] Chinese client, they’ll try to guess what you’re saying. Now, when I was teaching in Taiwan, there was an American teacher who told me he wanted to eat jiaoshui, and jiaoshui means “glue.” Actually, he wanted to eat “dumplings” [shuijiao]. What he said was Chinese; he just got it reversed. He just got it backwards. So we wondered, “Wow, what does he want to eat?” It turned out that, yes, he wanted to eat dumplings. In fact, we can guess what people want to say. I also think, um, it’s OK if you speak English when you go. In China, the level of English… many people should speak it pretty well. So, I think that if they go somewhere, if Americans go to China, they can “feel easy” because people treat foreign guests… they’re very friendly towards them. They won’t take an antagonistic attitude, or say, “You’re awful,” or that kind of thing. Everybody will do their best to help you. So, relax. Don’t worry. | OK,就是美国人到中国去的话，我们其实中国作为一个民族的话，他对客人就是远方来的客人，他的态度都是一种友好的态度。他不会因为你说英文跟他沟通不好，他不去给你做沟通，他们会从你的facial expressions，他会去猜你在想表达什么东西。然后还有一个我觉得，你即使你用很破的中文去跟他沟通也是没有问题的。他也是在中国就是说的客户，他也会去猜你要表达什么。那像我在那个台湾教书的时候就有美国老师，他跟我说他要吃胶水，you know，胶水就是glue，结果他是想要吃dumpling。但是他这个就是中文。他就是刚刚就是说reversed，对，他就是刚刚相反的。所以说我们一猜，wow，他要吃什么呢？结果哦，对，他要吃水饺这样。对，其实我们是会去猜他要去表达什么东西。还有一个就是我觉得，嗯，你去的话你讲英文也没有关系。因为英文程度在就是中国的话，很多人都是应该是蛮棒的了。所以说，我觉得他到一个环境，美国人到中国去,他就是easy，feel easy，because因为大家对于就是国外的客人,他都是非常的友好的。他不会采取一种敌对的那种的态度，会说，你这很烂呀，这样这样，大家都会尽力帮助你。所以说，Don't worry，be easy。 |
