185: Chao Robert Zheng - Professional - Limited Chinese Ability

Concerning this issue, my thinking is as follows. If it’s a westerner, a foreigner, and his/her Chinese is at a good level; that is he/she can communicate (well), then I would encourage him/her to use what he has. But with most westerners and Americans, if they have absolutely no foundation in Chinese or if all they can say is “Ni hao”, I usually advise them not to try too hard at it. I say this because learning a little of Chinese in the hopes that it will help you in your business, may work the opposite way and become a burden making him unable to express himself smoothly. So instead of helping, it turns into something that divides his attention. So this is actually not a good thing.关于这个问题呢哈,我是这样子想的。如果是啊…这个西方人,外国人,他(英)、中文能够(语言)到一定的程度,可以沟通的话,那我会鼓励他用他现有的。但是对大部分的西方人,美国人的话,他们如果是没有一点中文的基础,或者只会说这个“你好”的话,我会建议他们不要在这方面做努力。因为既然想学一点中文,希望用那一点点的中文去帮助他做这个生意,我想有时候反而变成了他的一个负担,使他不能够自如地去展示他自己,去,嗯,发表他自己。所以,这样子反而变成他一个分心的事情。所以我想,这样反而不好。
