175: Qingqing Huang - Professional - Which Language to Speak
China, Shanghai
I'm going to talk about the language dimension for a moment. I think that in this formal setting… From my point of view, I hope, uh, to speak English with my foreign customers because I think that in a formal setting, everyone must, for example, this kind of setting, it makes you want to, uh, use English to converse. That being the case, both sides can better, um, better advance what your, uh, your business negotiations, uh, and these kinds of things. But, probably, if you can speak your foreign customers’ mother tongue, it’s also a huge advantage because you’ll make them feel very much at home. Like us here. If someone could speak Chinese, and spoke it well, you’d feel, um, that we could talk a little. Uh, but I think that it’s not in every setting that you, you can speak English, uh, with them, that you can use their mother tongue to talk. Why is that? That’s because I think that there are sure to be aspects of their mother tongue that you don’t understand or are not clear on. If you and, if you speak their mother language with them too much, uh, it will probably create some barriers. But you probably wouldn’t be aware of them. These barriers will create, will lead to some problems for you both when you are talking business. So I think that you can use English to avoid these kinds of problems. Though English isn’t, uh, the first language, the mother tongue of either you or your customers, I think there shouldn’t be any problem with using it to converse. Moreover, using English is obviously more formal, especially when you are engaged in very formal business talks.
